This deeply rooted and highly symbolic festival reflects the close bond between country people and the land, and the importance of agriculture to the nation’s culture and economy.

How San Isidro is celebrated

The celebrations in honour of San Isidro are known for their colour and popular fervour. Solemn masses, processions carrying the saint’s image, and offerings of farm produce are some of the common features of these festivities. In many towns, pilgrimages are organised to hermitages or shrines dedicated to San Isidro, where people share meals and traditional dances.

San Isidro, patron saint of farmers, at a pilgrimage in a field in Castile

Beyond its religious character, the San Isidro festivities are also an opportunity to celebrate life in the countryside and the work of farmers. There are ploughing contests, livestock and produce shows, and exhibitions of local crafts. Music and dance are also part of the festivities, with folk groups livening up the streets and squares of the towns.

In short, the San Isidro festivities are a living expression of the culture and traditions of rural Spain: a tribute to the land and to those who work it with dedication and effort, and a reminder of how important agriculture is to sustaining life and to the identity of rural communities.

Beyond tradition

It is worth highlighting that the figure of San Isidro has also gone beyond the religious and cultural sphere, becoming a symbol of the struggle for social justice and workers’ rights. In many towns, the San Isidro festivities are also an occasion to stress the importance of family farming and the need to protect agriculture and the companies that, like us, work the land.

In short, the San Isidro festivities are a rich and diverse celebration that reflects the deep connection between the Spanish people and the land and agriculture. It is a festival that invites reflection, joy and hope for the future of Spanish farming, and one that we at Cebollas Marchite celebrate too.

[31

post-12253","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-marchite
["GET
