World Water Day

March 22 is World Water Day, a celebration of the precious resource our onions need to grow well. At Cebollas Marchite we are very aware of how valuable water is for our crops, which is why we greatly appreciate all the efforts farmers make to use irrigation water as sustainably as possible.

Why do we need water in the fields?

Water is essential for crops to grow and develop. It carries nutrients, helping plant roots absorb minerals. It also regulates soil temperature, preventing extremes that could damage the plants.

Water availability affects crop yields, and shortages can cause water stress, reducing both the quantity and the quality of food, something we don’t want for our onions.

Efficient water management in agriculture is crucial for food security and environmental sustainability. Strategies such as proper irrigation and soil conservation help optimise water use in farming.

Water on our planet

According to 2023 UNESCO reports, 2 billion people (26% of the world’s population) lack access to safe drinking water, and 3.6 billion (46%) lack access to safely managed sanitation. What’s more, this scarcity is expected to worsen in the coming years as climate change intensifies.

Where does World Water Day come from?

World Water Day dates back to 1992, when the United Nations recommended its creation at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, also known as the Earth Summit.
